If one had to choose the genre to which Faure’s name deserves to be linked forever it would be the barcarolle. Not only because he is, of all composers, the one who devoted the most time and works to it (13 barcarolles spanning 40 years of his life), but because with him, a dying genre found a way to renew itself, going beyond the boundaries where tradition had held it, and going from the anecdotal to the universal. Faure’s barcarolles form a single, continuous expanse of water, an entanglement of canals, blending and moving ineluctably toward the end of everything. With him, the genre becomes inseparable from a panta rei philosophy: everything collapses, says the philosopher, to no longer return. Pianist Billy Eidi is a sought after French pianist, who strives tirelessly to perform, record, and further French music.
